Tzitzimime adalah salah satu iblis yang ada dalam budaya Aztec. Tujuan utama dari tokoh-tokoh jahat ini diyakini untuk menghancurkan dunia. Ada perdebatan tentang jenis kelamin tokoh-tokoh ini, karena bagi sebagian sejarawan mereka adalah laki-laki, sedangkan untuk sebagian lainnya adalah perempuan.
Menurut mitologi Aztec ada 13 langit, dengan Tzitzimime menghuni yang kedua. Di surga kedua ini, setan berkeliaran yang, menurut mitologi Mexica, bertugas menggerakkan bintang. Menurut legenda ini, Tzitzimime selalu menunggu matahari terbenam untuk menyerang manusia. Mereka adalah makhluk yang hanya bisa dilihat pada malam hari.

Ia sering dibandingkan dengan dewa kematian, Mictlantecuhtli. Keduanya memiliki ciri fisik yang sangat mirip. Misalnya, mereka adalah makhluk yang sosoknya terbuat dari tulang.
Asal
Ada beberapa cara untuk menyebut Tzitzimime, yang namanya berasal dari bahasa Nahuatl. Menurut penelitian, itu bisa menjadi komposisi dari dua istilah: tzintzun, yang merupakan sejenis burung, dan mitl, yang mengacu pada panah.
Mempertimbangkan keyakinan bahwa makhluk-makhluk ini menghuni surga kedua, mereka juga dianggap sebagai bintang.
Ada beberapa versi yang tidak menyebut Tzitzimime sebagai iblis, tetapi justru sebaliknya, memastikan bahwa itu adalah sosok mitologis yang mampu membersihkan seseorang dari beberapa jenis penyakit. Bagaimanapun, tindakan ini tidak sepenuhnya baik, karena Tzitzimime bertanggung jawab untuk menularkan penyakit itu ke individu lain.
Bagi sejarawan, kualifikasi 'setan' diberikan oleh orang Spanyol setibanya di negara Meksiko. Anggota gereja percaya bahwa Tzitzimime memiliki karakteristik yang merupakan ciri tokoh jahat.

Salah satu gambar terpenting tentang Tzitzimime muncul di Codex Magliabechiano, yang ditulis sekitar abad ke-16 oleh Antonio Magliabecchi.
Dalam Florentine Codex Tzitzimime dikaitkan dengan gerhana. Dalam teks tersebut Anda dapat membaca bahwa jika gerhana matahari terjadi, iblis ini tampaknya memakan semua orang.

Menurut mitologi Aztec, Tzitzimime hanya dapat dilihat pada malam hari. Dalam beberapa teks mereka digambarkan sebagai makhluk yang tubuhnya tidak memiliki daging, yaitu hanya terbuat dari tulang.
Mereka adalah setan yang sangat ditakuti oleh masyarakat adat yang mendiami daerah pegunungan tengah, dimana pemujaan matahari adalah salah satu praktik yang paling umum.
Menurut kepercayaan Aztec, Tzitzimime biasanya tidak menyerang pada siang hari atau pada musim kemarau. Selain itu, mereka adalah iblis yang sangat tertarik pada anak-anak, yang merupakan individu pertama yang ingin mereka lukai.
Data paling akurat tentang ciri fisik mereka dapat ditemukan di naskah kuno Magliabechiano dan Tudela. Di kedua teks, tokoh-tokoh dengan kuku panjang, dalam bentuk cakar, dihargai. Mereka berbeda dalam hal pakaian yang mereka kenakan. Dalam salah satu gambar Tzitzimime memakai rok dan di gambar lainnya cawat, yang oleh orang Mexica disebut sebagai maxtlatl.
Grup
Tzitzimime dapat dibagi menjadi beberapa jenis. Setiap kelas mewakili warna yang bisa merah, putih, biru, atau kuning. Di antara tzitzimime ini adalah Iztac Tzitzimitl, Xouchcal Tzitzimitl, Coz Tzitzimitl, dan Itlatlauhcatzitzimitl. Warnanya berkaitan dengan kulit masing-masing iblis ini. Keempat kelompok setan ini dianggap perempuan.
Tokoh lain yang terkait dengan Tzitzimime adalah Itzpapalotl dan Mayahuel. Yang pertama diyakini sebagai iblis terburuk dari semua jenis ini. Itu terkait dengan kupu-kupu hitam dan dalam beberapa kasus dengan kelelawar.
Sementara itu, Mayahuel mengacu pada seorang nenek yang membunuh cucunya sendiri sehingga mayatnya akan menjadi makanan bagi seluruh alam semesta.
Legenda
Mitos mengatakan bahwa adalah mungkin untuk mengetahui bahwa Tzitzimime hadir jika Anda dapat mendengar suara yang menirukan angin yang lewat di antara kerang. Alasannya adalah karena pakaian iblis ini dulunya adalah rok yang dihiasi dengan siput. Mendengar suara ini adalah hal yang buruk karena siapapun yang mendengar kedatangan Tzitzimime akan mati.

Upacara
Upacara api baru adalah ritual orang Mexica. Biasanya dilakukan setiap 52 tahun, yang merupakan waktu yang berlalu untuk dua kalender budaya Aztec bertepatan di hari-hari awal mereka. Ritual ini juga disebut Xiuhmolpilli.
Ide dari upacara tersebut adalah untuk menyingkirkan benda-benda material yang menyebabkan suatu jenis hobi atau pemujaan. Untuk ini, barang-barang ini dibuang ke dalam api. Hari ini dia adalah salah satu tokoh budaya Meksiko yang kurang penting dan bahkan kurang diingat. Dia telah digambarkan di beberapa video game dan bahkan di kartun, tetapi tidak ada rincian lebih lanjut yang diberikan tentang makhluk jahat ini.
